The Narrative

24 cards. Tap to reveal. Pick the ones that fit the room.
Tier 1 — The Spine
The Budget Miracle
T1 · L2
"Every miracle has a budget line."
Jerome Fernando's empire. 12.25 billion rupees in transactions. Mystical manipulation with a spreadsheet.
Ask the room: "How many of you have sat in a service where money and miracles shared a stage?"
tap to reveal
White Vans
T2 · L4
"White vans didn't ask questions. They answered them."
State-level confession mechanism. Surveillance as control. Not about party politics — about the mechanism of fear.
Framing note: "This isn't about which party you support. It's about whether a system used fear as a tool. The mechanism is the point."
tap to reveal
Two Words
T2 · L6
"'Rata' + 'Apa.' Two words. Entire ideology."
Loaded language in Sinhala nationalism. Two words that shut down every counter-argument. Everyone in the room has said them.
"When was the last time two words made you feel like a traitor for disagreeing?"
tap to reveal
The Obituary
T2 · L7
"Lasantha wrote his obituary. The doctrine wrote itself."
Lasantha Wickrematunge, editor of The Sunday Leader, assassinated January 2009. Doctrine over person — the cause was more important than his life.
tap to reveal
Stay for the Children
T3 · L7
"'Stay for the children' is doctrine over person."
The institution of marriage. Lifton's "doctrine over person" applied to the most personal decision of your life. Half the room knows this sentence.
"Who here has heard this sentence — said to them, or by them?"
tap to reveal
The Look
T3 · L8
"Unmarried at 30 in Colombo. You know the look."
Dispensing of existence without a church, a leader, or a doctrine. Just a look at a family gathering. Society as cult.
tap to reveal
Arrack Uncle
T4 · L2
"The Fifth Precept says 'intoxicants that cloud the mind.' Your arrack uncle disagrees."
Sacred science meets lived reality. Comic relief — but the point is serious. Selective application of moral codes.
Let the laughter land. Then: "How many rules in your life are enforced selectively?"
tap to reveal
Galle Face
T5 · L2
"That feeling at Galle Face? That was real. And that's how it works."
Aragalaya, 2022. Mystical manipulation through authentic collective experience. The feeling was genuine — and that's exactly what makes it dangerous.
Framing: "This isn't about whether the NPP is right. It's about whether you can question them without social cost. That's the Lifton test."
tap to reveal
System Change
T5 · L6
"'System change' means everything and nothing. That's by design."
Loaded language in progressive wrapping. When a slogan replaces an argument, the slogan wins.
tap to reveal
What Kind of Sri Lankan
T6 · L4
"'You don't watch cricket? What kind of Sri Lankan are you?'"
Cricket as identity gatekeeping. Confession mechanism — your ignorance of the sport is treated as a character flaw.
tap to reveal
The Invisible Uniform
T7 · L3
"Progressive. English-speaking. Urban. The uniform is invisible."
THE mirror card. This audience — demand for purity with a liberal aesthetic. Deliver with self-inclusion: "I'm wearing it too."
"Look around this room. What's the unspoken dress code? And I don't mean clothes."
tap to reveal
The Thesis
CLOSING
"Sri Lanka is not a country with cults in it. Sri Lanka is a cult of cults."
The landing. Everything clicks. Deliver only after the gradient is established.

Tier 2 — Power Moves (deploy as conversation opens)
The Feed
T7 · L1
"You're here because someone curated your feed."
Self-selection as milieu control. Nobody forced them to attend — the algorithm did.
tap to reveal
Three Minutes
T7 · L6
"You've been using 'Lifton criteria' for 3 minutes. You didn't know that term an hour ago."
Loaded language demonstrated in real time. The audience is inside the mechanism.
tap to reveal
The Scapegoat
T4 · L8
"The 'drug dealer' is Sri Lanka's permanent scapegoat."
Dispensing of existence through morality. The word "drugs" does more policing than the actual police.
tap to reveal
World Cup Nationhood
T6 · L8
"The '96 World Cup created more Sri Lankans than independence did."
National identity manufactured through cricket. Belonging was optional before; after '96, it was mandatory.
tap to reveal
Fear as Data
T5 · L5
"The answer you're afraid to give — that's the data point."
Sacred science — when questioning feels like betrayal, you've found the boundary.
tap to reveal
Grandmother's Betel
T4 · L5
"Try telling your grandmother the precept includes her betel."
Sacred science applied consistently becomes absurd. The selectivity is the mechanism.
tap to reveal
Defend Jerome
T7 · L8
"Imagine someone here defended Jerome. What would happen?"
Dispensing of existence — tested live. The room's reaction IS the proof.
tap to reveal
Easy Tolerance
T7 · L8
"Tolerance is easy when everyone already agrees."
The final mirror. Progressive spaces that are homogeneous aren't progressive — they're comfortable.
tap to reveal
Tier 3 — Depth Cards (extended conversation)
Missing Members
T1 · L8
"Ask the members who left. If you can find them."
Dispensing of existence — the people who leave become invisible.
tap to reveal
WhatsApp Group
T3 · L1
"Your WhatsApp group changed the day you got married."
Milieu control through social norms. Nobody imposed it — it just happened.
tap to reveal
Front Page
T6 · L1
"A match can clear parliament from the front page. That's milieu control."
National-scale information control through sport. Nobody coordinates it — the attention economy does.
tap to reveal
Section 365A
T3 · L3
"Section 365A isn't about morality. It's about compliance."
Sri Lanka's anti-homosexuality law. Demand for purity encoded in legislation.
tap to reveal
The Batsman
T6 · L7
"We outsourced our national conscience to a batsman."
Doctrine over person — the sport's reputation matters more than the players who break under it.

The Empathy Card
HOLD SPACE
"If you recognise something in your own life right now — that's not a failure. That's the beginning of seeing."
Deploy AFTER the mirror cards. Someone in the room is inside something. Cults meet real needs: belonging, purpose, certainty, identity. Seeing the mechanism doesn't require leaving the people.

The Self-Disclaimer
CLOSING
"Don't take anyone's word for it. Not even mine."
Kālāma Sutta. Riz disclaims his own authority. This talk is not a new doctrine — it's an invitation to see. Without this card, the talk becomes the thing it warns against.

7 threads. The entire argument compresses into these. Any question from the room maps to at least one. Tap for the full picture.
1. the mechanism
UNIVERSAL
the 8 criteria apply to everything — from one pastor to an entire country
Lifton's 8 criteria for thought reform (1961) are the lens for the entire talk. Hassan's BITE model (1985) adds behavioral/information/thought/emotional control layers. Lalich's Bounded Choice (2004) explains how cults limit perceptual autonomy. Ross's deprogramming confirms the mechanism is consistent across all groups — the same 4-block method works on every cult he's encountered. The mechanism doesn't change. Only the intensity does.
8 criteria: Milieu Control, Mystical Manipulation, Demand for Purity, Confession, Sacred Science, Loaded Language, Doctrine over Person, Dispensing of Existence. Every target in the game scores against these. Jerome: obvious. Cricket: surprising. The audience: nuclear.
Lifton (1961) · Hassan (1985) · Lalich (2004) · Ross (WIRED)

2. the gradient
DRAMATIC ARC
obvious cult → political power → personal institution → you, right now
The 7 targets are ordered to escalate discomfort: T1 Jerome (safe — everyone agrees), T2 Rajapaksas (political — some tension), T3 Marriage (personal — domestic), T4 Fifth Precept (cultural — taboo), T5 NPP/JVP (current — this audience likely voted for them), T6 Cricket (identity — everyone's in), T7 This Audience (mirror — nobody escapes). The gradient IS the argument. Each step closer makes the next one harder to dismiss.
Narrative design: the talk mirrors the game's own reveal structure. "The cult was always getting closer." The reveal that cricket scores 8/8 (HIGHER than Jerome) is the structural turning point — the moment the audience realizes the mechanism isn't about "those people."

3. the soil
5 mechanisms make sri lanka uniquely fertile — island, shame, colonialism, grandmother, diaspora
Why HERE specifically? (1) Island mentality: bounded geography = milieu control at scale — there's no "next village." (2) Lajja system: 22M enforcers, no uniform needed, shame does the policing. (3) Colonial layering: pre-colonial caste structure + colonial institutional control + post-colonial identity crisis = triple compression. (4) Grandmother test: Amma/Achchi as ultimate authority — bypasses all institutional critique. (5) Diaspora mirror: nationalism intensifies with distance — 2M+ diaspora enforce purity from abroad. PLUS: poverty doubled 12.5→25% (2021-22), loneliness epidemic (26% mortality = 15 cigs/day), post-crisis ecological succession (cults as pioneer species).
Asch conformity (island amplification). Foucault panopticon (22M social enforcers). Anderson Imagined Communities. Øversveen 2022 + Surgeon General 2023 (loneliness data). L1-K5 ecological succession metaphor.

4. the acceleration
30 years → 3 years → 6 months — cults now form at digital speed
Moonies: 30 years to build a global cult. QAnon: 3 years (69M tweets, 487K FB posts, 281K IG posts by June 2020). TikTok cults: 6 months. COVID wellness-to-conspiracy pipeline: even faster. 19% of Americans believe QAnon core tenets (PRRI 2024). Digital milieu control doesn't need geography — Wi-Fi works fine. Social media radicalism cycle (L1-E8). Jerome's reach via digital amplification. "Playing for the country" myth exposed by franchise cricket economics.
ISD data (June 2020). PRRI 2024 (19% overall, 32% Trump Republicans). Chronos analysis: acceleration timeline with 60x compression. Wellman 2024 (SAGE): wellness influencers as pseudo-authorities.

5. the gap
no law. no language. no tools to even NAME the problem.
UK Serious Crime Act 2015 §76 (coercive control). Ireland Domestic Violence Act 2018 §39. QLD Criminal Code (Coercive Control) 2025 — "Hannah's Law," 14 years imprisonment. Sri Lanka: ZERO. Section 291B (outraging religious feelings) addresses offence, not control. ICCPR Act 56 of 2007 addresses speech, not psychological coercion. PDPA 2022 §9 treats sensitive data (religion, health, politics) — but has no provisions for psychological manipulation. No academic infrastructure for cult studies. No Sinhala vocabulary for "coercive control." The gap IS the permission structure.
Comparative law: SL vs UK vs Ireland vs QLD vs India DPDPA 2023. India §7 stricter on consent. India §17 stricter on minors. CBSL identified 21-24 pyramid schemes — but legal response targets FINANCIAL fraud, not psychological coercion. L1-G3: "No tools to NAME the problem."

6. the paradox
SELF-REFUTING
the talk IS the cult — admitting it is the only ethical move
L1-G10: "The Riz Paradox." L1-A12: cult lifecycle maps onto the game — recruit (QR), indoctrinate (Lifton language), exploit (data), persist (email). "Every cult starts with a sign-up form." Festinger: the more invested, the harder to leave — and the audience has invested an hour. The ONLY resolution: the self-disclaimer. Kālāma Sutta (AN 3.65): "Don't accept by tradition, by scripture, by reasoning alone. Test against experience." This is both the antidote AND the structural escape. It prevents the talk from becoming doctrine. "Don't take anyone's word for it. Not even mine."
Festinger: cognitive dissonance as glue. L1-A12 cult lifecycle. Kālāma Sutta structural analysis. The self-refuting close is architecturally necessary — without it, the talk replicates the mechanism it describes.

EMPATHY
vulnerability is circumstance, not stupidity — cults meet real needs
Ross deprogrammed medical doctors, lawyers, engineers. Intelligence is no defence. Weber: the need for transcendence is evolutionary — we never evolved past the unknowable state. Loneliness = 26% mortality increase = 15 cigarettes/day (Øversveen 2022, Surgeon General 2023). Cults meet REAL needs: belonging, purpose, certainty, identity. Lalich: Bounded Choice limits autonomy, but the needs themselves are legitimate. Kuran: preference falsification means everyone privately doubts but nobody says it — until Aragalaya. Burt: Jerome's power from bridging domains, not from any single one. Girard: scapegoat cycles (Muslims 2014-19, Tamils historically, "drug dealers" permanently, "the West" selectively). "If you recognise something in your own life — that's not a failure. That's the beginning of seeing." WITHOUT THIS THREAD, THE TALK CAUSES HARM.
Ross (WIRED 22:59). Weber. Øversveen 2022. Surgeon General 2023. Lalich (2004). Kuran (1995). Burt (1992). Girard scapegoat theory. Toxoplasma metaphor: cult hijacks neurochemistry (dopamine, oxytocin, cortisol). L1-K2: families as ultimate cult ("can you leave without cost?").

The Ghost Question
GUN #3 PLANT
"How many of you here believe in ghosts? Supernatural beings? Some kind of energy?"
Open with hands up. Get participation reflex going. Don't explain — just collect the data. This pays off in Phase 4 with Weber's "human need for magic." The point: we never evolved beyond the unknowable state. It happened too fast.
Weber: charisma as routinized magic. The need for transcendence is biological, not irrational. Loneliness epidemic: 26% mortality increase = 15 cigarettes/day (Øversveen 2022, US Surgeon General 2023). Cults meet this need.
Weber, Economy and Society · Øversveen 2022 · US Surgeon General 2023
"Loneliness kills as much as 15 cigarettes a day. The need for belonging isn't weakness — it's biology. Cults exploit biology."

Jerome: The Obvious Cult
MUST HIT
"12.25 billion rupees. One pastor. One congregation. Same mechanisms I'm about to give you."
The anchor. Everything after is measured against this. Don't dwell — 2 minutes max. The audience already knows Jerome. The insight isn't WHO — it's HOW. Introduce the 8 Lifton criteria here as the lens.
Burt structural holes: Jerome's power came from bridging cricket + religion + business + politics + international evangelism. Nobody else occupied that intersection. Festinger: cognitive dissonance as glue — the more followers sacrificed, the more committed.
Daily Mirror, Born Again investigation · Burt (1992) · Festinger (1957)
"CBSL identified 21-24 pyramid schemes. GoldQuest alone: $15M. Jerome is the tip. The mechanism is the iceberg."

Launch the Game
GUN #1 PLANT
"Take out your phones. I want you to rate 7 groups against cult criteria. willyoujoinmycult.pages.dev"
THIS IS GUN #1. The game itself is the mechanism: sign-up form, shared language, group participation, scoring that creates identity ("I'm an observer"). Plant now. Fire in Phase 3 when you reveal the game WAS the recruitment. Give 5-8 minutes for people to play (or play along as you present).
L1-A12: cult lifecycle — recruit → indoctrinate → exploit → persist. The game maps to: recruit (QR/link), indoctrinate (Lifton language), exploit (data collection), persist (email sign-up at the end). The audience is inside the mechanism.

Marriage at 6/8
MUST HIT
"Marriage scores 6 out of 8 on Lifton criteria. Higher than some actual cults."
First domestic discomfort. Deploy "Stay for the Children" card (L7) + "The Look" card (L8) here. Section 365A = Victorian import, not Buddhist. Vinaya Paṇḍaka classifications acknowledge non-binary gender — the texts are MORE progressive than the law.
Section 365/365A: British colonial Penal Code, not Theravāda doctrine. India struck down Section 377 in 2018. Thailand: same Buddhist texts, far more tolerant. Proves the restriction is political, not doctrinal. Ardhanarishvara (Hindu): divinity as non-binary.
SL Penal Code · India SC Navtej Singh Johar v. Union of India (2018) · Vinaya Piṭaka
"Thailand has the same Buddhist texts and is far more tolerant. If it were about the religion, Thailand would have the same laws. It's about politics, not precepts."

Cricket at 8/8
MUST HIT
"Cricket passes ALL 8 Lifton criteria. Higher than Jerome."
The fun betrayal. The room will laugh, then go quiet. Use: "We outsourced our national conscience to a batsman." The 1996 World Cup (17 March 1996, Lahore, Ranatunga captain) created more Sri Lankans than independence did. Muralitharan is Tamil — the "Sinhala triumph" edited out its own diversity.
Anderson's Imagined Communities (1983): nations built through shared rituals + symbols. Cricket as emotional permission — men crying, hugging strangers, permitted ONLY in cricket, forbidden elsewhere. SLC Board as corrupt clergy — unelected, unaccountable, controls the sacred.
Anderson (1983) · 1996 World Cup records · SLC governance records
"Men in Sri Lanka are allowed to cry about cricket. Think about what that means. The sport grants emotional permission that nothing else in the culture does."

NPP/Aragalaya — Handle With Care
CAREFUL
"That feeling at Galle Face? That was real. And that's exactly how it works."
This audience likely voted NPP. Don't attack the choice — question the mechanism. "This isn't about whether they're right. It's about whether you can question them without social cost. That's the Lifton test." Aragalaya = Kuran's preference falsification collapse. Everyone privately doubted but nobody said it — then suddenly everyone did. NPP filled the vacuum.
Kuran: preference falsification → sudden cascade. Aragalaya = collapse of gap between private doubt and public expression. "System change" as loaded language (L6): means everything, means nothing, designed that way. Vijaya myth as national cult origin story — founding narrative is CONQUEST, not GOVERNANCE.
Kuran, Private Truths, Public Lies (1995) · Cakkavatti-Sīhanāda Sutta
"Try posting criticism of the NPP. Count the replies. The speed of the backlash IS the data point."

The Drug Classification Lie
"The word 'drugs' does more policing than the actual police."
Fifth Precept actual text: pamāda (heedlessness), not substance ban. Nixon's Ehrlichman admission: War on Drugs designed to target Black Americans + anti-war activists. "The real intoxicant is the political rally." The category "drug" is empty — it reflects power, not pharmacology.
Nāgārjuna: emptiness of the category. Ehrlichman (Nixon aide) confession. SL: 3 generations of drug users in every family — relatable, funny. Hypocrisy index: moralises about drugs, massive alcoholism society-wide.
Ehrlichman admission · Fifth Precept, Pañcasīla · Nāgārjuna, Mūlamadhyamakakārikā

The Deikman Reveal
GUN #2 FIRES
"Cult behaviour is normal behaviour. The difference isn't kind. It's degree."
THIS is Gun #2. Deikman (1990): cult behaviour is the norm, not the exception. Every group uses the same 8 mechanisms — the only variable is intensity. This reframes the entire talk. The audience should feel the floor shift. Everything they rated in the game is now about THEM, not "those people."
Deikman, The Wrong Way Home (1990). Asch conformity: island geography amplified continental conformity into compressed space. "On a continent, ostracism means moving to the next village. On an island, there's nowhere to go." Toxoplasma gondii metaphor: cult leader hijacks neurochemistry (dopamine, oxytocin, cortisol).
Deikman (1990) · Asch (1951) · Ravana analysis (parasitism metaphor)

THE nuclear moment. Target 7 in the game: "A Saturday gathering where everyone speaks the same language about the same things." Self-selection IS milieu control with better branding. "You're here because someone curated your feed." Deploy with self-inclusion: "I'm wearing it too."
Lifton L1 (Milieu Control) + L3 (Demand for Purity) + L6 (Loaded Language) + L8 (Dispensing of Existence). This audience self-selects: educated, English-speaking, progressive, urban. The Riz Paradox
GUN #1 FIRES
"I've been running a cult for the last hour. And you signed up."
Gun #1 fires. The game WAS the recruitment mechanism. L1-A12 (cult lifecycle): recruit (QR code), indoctrinate (new language — "Lifton criteria"), exploit (data collection), persist (email sign-up at end). "Every cult starts with a sign-up form." The ONLY ethical move is to admit it. L1-G10: "The Riz Paradox — admitting he's running a cult during the talk is the only ethical move."
L1-A12: cult lifecycle. "You didn't know 'Lifton criteria' an hour ago. That's L6 — loaded language. I gave it to you. You accepted it because it felt empowering. That's step one." Festinger: the more you invest (time, attention, emotional engagement), the harder it is to leave.
Lifton (1961) · Festinger (1957) · L1-G10 (Founder's Notes)

22 Million Enforcers
"No badge. No uniform. Every aunty, every uncle, every WhatsApp group. Lajja."
The enforcement mechanism is social, not legal. 22 million Sri Lankans enforce conformity through shame (lajja). This is L1 (Milieu Control) at national scale, operated by the population itself. The strongman paradox: the system doesn't need a leader because every citizen is a deputy.
Atsuko analysis: lajja as invisible power mechanism. Foucault: panopticon — 22M social enforcers. Island geography compresses conformity (Asch). "On a continent, the dissident moves to the next village. On an island, there is no next village."

No coercive control legislation in Sri Lanka. You cannot prosecute psychological coercion. Section 291B (outraging religious feelings) was used against Jerome — but it addresses offence, not control. The legal gap is the permission structure.
UK Serious Crime Act 2015 §76. Ireland Domestic Violence Act 2018 §39. QLD Criminal Code (Coercive Control) 2025 — "Hannah's Law," 14 years. ICCPR Act 56 of 2007 also applied to Jerome but addresses speech, not psychological coercion.

GUN #3 FIRES
"Remember the ghost question? Here's why you raised your hand."
Gun #3 fires. The ghost question wasn't a joke. The human need for transcendence is evolutionary — we never evolved past wonder/unknowable state. It happened too fast. This need is WHY cults work. Not stupidity. Not weakness. Biology. "A generation in simultaneous identity collapse" (L1-G7) + loneliness epidemic = the perfect recruitment soil.

Kālāma Sutta + Self-Disclaimer
MUST HIT
"The way out is seeing, not leaving. Don't take anyone's word for it. Not even mine."
TWO beats in one card. First: "The way out is seeing, not leaving. You can't leave Sri Lanka. You can't leave marriage. You can't leave cricket. But once you see the mechanism, it loses power." Second: Kālāma Sutta (AN 3.65) — "Don't accept by tradition. Don't accept by scripture. Test against your own experience." Then the self-disclaimer: "Not even mine." THIS makes the talk self-refuting. Without this, you become the thing you warned about.
Kālāma Sutta (AN 3.65): the Buddha's anti-cult instruction — oldest in the tradition. L1-G5: "This isn't Western individualism. It's the oldest instruction in your own tradition." The self-disclaimer structurally prevents the talk from becoming doctrine.
